Craft beer also known as microbrew is made by a brewer that is small, independent, and traditional. Craft as in craft. And Beer as in Beer. It's about crafted artisan beer. It all begun in the USA in the 1970s started by Coors, Miller and Anheuser Bush. Basically they had no alternative in their vicinity, but only medium bad, hardly distinguishable industrial beers. Hence, they began to brew it themselves.  
 
Moreover the best "homebrewers" at that time were the "microbreweries" which were selling their own beers in the area.
 
This tradition is being followed till this day, only that craft beer has been popular from the Whole-Foods-better-eater-hipster era. Samuel Adams, Sierra Nevada, Stone Brewing Co.,Lagunitas and Brooklyn Brewery manufacture enormous quantities today and sell around the world instead of selling barely in the pub around the corner.
 
One thing is definite: It's all about freedom in beer manufacturing. Of companies, from huge to small breweries, it’s about taste variety and distinctness; for that reason, to make amazingly non-mainstream beers, brewing styles are unusual, with unusual recipes.
 
It comes to be not just any mass product, but beer, brewed by people, not machines, hand and heart and not just doing so to win.
 
Long Craft Beer is not a merely American thing. All around the world more and more good beer is brewed & crafted. It is a beer made in a traditional or non-mechanized way by a small brewery. Bear in mind, back in the nineties when beer brewed by small, independent brewers was called microbrew.
 
It is quite odd that the name faded away. It was a grand little word that wholly described the new kind of breweries that were capturing market share back then.
